‘I can’t go and touch her.’ Long-term-care homes finally open their doors to visitors, but distancing in many remains

On the day that nursing homes were allowed to open their doors to family and friends, John Jarema was among the first to walk inside.

His 92-year-old mother, Daniela, lives at the Copernicus Lodge in west Toronto. Jarema had high hopes that a Wednesday morning conversation in the common room would offer a closer connection than his outdoor visits, but government safety precautions kept them as far apart as ever.
